Illustration: Donald & Daisy

red crayola pencil sketch

On summer break and have been sketching a lot! This idea came from the Donald and Daisy Micropopz that Safeway was giving away at some point. These two are so cute! I love that they have a long history of on/off relationship because they have very strong personalities. This sketch was made with a regular Crayola red color pencil.

no. 5 nib

Started by tracing the sketch on to cardstock with a lightbox; something I need to improve. Then used a No. 5 nib and old black ink.

Messy desk shot! Fully inked. Changed some parts of the image when tracing.

Next using a Speedball B-5 nib to quickly fill in spot blacks. This little nib is part of the cartooning set so it is perfect for this kind of image.

The spot black looks okay, at this point I am not loving it.

Next is a No. 3 brush which is great for line weight variety.

Added feather texture with the brush but messed up on some spots.

Filled in Donald’s feathers because of mess ups and liked the contrast!

Next is using a sharp knife technique to bring in some more texture. Have not gotten the hang of this technique and basically rip up the paper.

Finally, I used the Gelly Roll in size 8 to add white and fix some spots. Also used a Micron size 3. If I was taking this further, I would go in digitally to clean up spots.
